Our Values
The principles that shape how we work and guide every interaction.
Our values are the foundation of Bigger Than Pain and the clinic. They are not just words on a page — they are the principles that guide every interaction, every session, and every decision we make. They are what we hold ourselves accountable to, and they are what you can hold us accountable to as well.
We believe that the relationship between a practitioner and a client is one of the most important factors in achieving a successful outcome. These values are designed to create the conditions for that relationship to thrive.
Trust
Trust is not something that can be demanded or assumed — it has to be built, gradually, through actions. We understand that if you are coming to us, you may have already had negative experiences with other practitioners. You may have been let down, dismissed, or told things that turned out not to be true. That can make it very difficult to trust again.
We start by meeting you where you are. Your experience is our starting point — not a textbook, not a scan result, not someone else's opinion. What you are feeling is real, and it matters. We will never dismiss your experience or make you feel like you are not being heard.
We are transparent about what we think is going on, what we plan to do about it, and what we think the likely outcome will be. We will never promise something we can't deliver, and we will always be upfront about the limitations of what we can do.
Trust goes both ways. We trust you to be honest with us about how you are feeling, what is working, and what is not. We trust you to do the work that is required outside of our sessions together. And we trust you to tell us if something does not feel right.
Respect
We respect your experiences, your preferences, and your beliefs. You are the expert on your own body — you live in it every day. Our role is to bring our knowledge and expertise to the table and work with you, not on you.
Respect means that we will always explain what we are doing and why. We will never do anything without your consent, and we will always give you the opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns. Your comfort and safety are paramount.
Respect also means adherence. We show up on time, we are prepared, and we give you our full attention for the duration of our time together. We expect the same in return — not because we demand it, but because mutual respect is what makes this work.
You are not just a client or a patient to us. You are a person with a life, a story, hopes, and fears. We see you as a whole person, not just a collection of symptoms.
Honesty
We are committed to delivering the best possible service, and that starts with honesty. We will not claim to “fix” you, because that implies that you are broken — and you are not. What we will do is work with you to understand what's going on, and together, find a way forward.
We will be straightforward about what we think is contributing to your pain, what we think will help, and what we think the timeline for improvement might look like. We will never exaggerate or make claims that we cannot back up.
If we don't think we are the right fit for you, we will tell you. If we think you would benefit from seeing someone else — a doctor, a psychologist, a different type of therapist — we will say so. Your progress is more important than our ego.
We are honest about what works and what does not. If something is not working, we will change course. We are not married to any single approach or technique — we are married to results.
Communication
Communication is central to creating change. The way we talk about pain, the way we explain what is happening in your body, and the way we frame your situation can have a profound impact on your recovery.
The language of pain is messy. It is full of words that can scare people — words like “degeneration”, “wear and tear”, “bulging disc”, and “bone on bone”. These words can create fear, and fear can amplify pain. We are very intentional about the language we use, because words matter.
We believe in clear, simple explanations. We will never hide behind jargon or use complicated terminology to make ourselves sound smart. If we can't explain something in a way that makes sense to you, then we don't understand it well enough ourselves.
Communication is also about listening. We listen to what you are saying, and just as importantly, to what you are not saying. We pay attention to the words you use, the way you describe your pain, and the stories you tell about your body. All of this gives us valuable information that helps us help you.
Self Sovereignty
Our ultimate aim is to make ourselves redundant. We want to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and tools to manage your own body and your own pain. We are not interested in creating a dependency — we are interested in creating independence.
You are not a passive receiver of treatment. You are an active participant in your own recovery. We will give you the information and the tools, but ultimately, it is you who has to do the work. And the good news is, you are more than capable of doing it.
Self-sovereignty means that you are in the driver's seat. You make the decisions about your own body and your own health. We are here to guide, to educate, and to support — but the power is yours.
We want you to leave our sessions not just feeling better, but understanding why you feel better. When you understand the “why”, you have the power to recreate that result on your own, whenever you need to.
Life Long Learning
We are hungry for knowledge. The world of pain science, movement, and human health is constantly evolving, and we are committed to staying at the forefront of that evolution. We never stop learning, because the more we know, the better we can serve you.
Our areas of study are deeply interconnected and span a wide range of disciplines including Sleep, Psychology, Biology, Biomechanics, Neurology, Nutrition, Strength and Conditioning, Pain Science, Anatomy, and Philosophy. We believe that the more lenses you have to look through, the clearer the picture becomes.
We also believe in learning from our clients. Every person who walks through our door teaches us something new. Your experience, your story, and your body are unique — and working with you makes us better at what we do.
Continual growth is not just a professional commitment — it is a personal one. We apply the same principles of curiosity, exploration, and self-improvement to our own lives that we encourage in our clients.
Your Recovery Journey
These values are not just principles — they are promises. When you work with us, you can expect to be treated with trust, respect, and honesty. You can expect clear communication, a commitment to your independence, and a practitioner who never stops learning. Your journey is unique, and we are honoured to be a part of it.
